In early 2020, the world, the country, and Eastside Village were hit by a pandemic - Covid-19. In talking with Members about that time, one phrase was common: we hunkered down! That was certainly the initial reaction. Initially, we didn't know what caused it or how to protect ourselves. Before long, though, Eastside Village responded by making phone calls to all the members to make sure they were okay. Our members learned how to use Zoom, and many of our gatherings moved from living rooms to the internet.
Eventually, a vaccine became available, but was initially very limited in availability. Older seniors were given priority. Eastside Members scoured the pharmacies and other sources to get appointments for our older members. Eventually there were larger facilities - the convention center and the airport. Drivers we found to transport folks in need of the shot, typically both driver and passenger wearing masks, the passenger in the back seat on the far side from the driver, and the windows open even in the winter! We got the job done!
Eastside Village was the only Portland Village to gain members during the pandemic. Many Members gave of their time to help their fellow members. We really learned that it takes a village!
